WE MUST BE BORN AGAIN! (Illustrated)

The Lord is very serious about our being saved from the penalty of our sin – eternal damnation in the fires of hell…

Romans 3:23  “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

Romans 6:23  “For the wages [PAYMENT] of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Revelation 20:14-15
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The Lord has taken our salvation very, very seriously. He has given His Son, the Lord Jesus, to die in our place, to suffer for our sins in our place. He requires that we understand how to benefit from the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. And He requires that we respond very seriously with understanding from His Word (the Bible). The following is what the Lord teaches us in His Word as the only way for us to be saved from the penalty of our sin…

you must be born again; ignorant of God; cast out demons

Mark 5:1-20
1 And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
2 And when he came out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
4 Because  he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been wrenched apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man subdue him.
5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshiped him,
7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the most high God? I adjure [BEG] you by God, that you torment me not.
8 For he had said unto him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.
9 And he asked him, What is your name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
10 And he begged him much that he would not send them away out of the country.
11 Now there was there near unto the mountains a great herd of swine [PIGS] feeding.
12 And all the demons begged him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
13 And Jesus gave them leave [PERMISSION]. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (there were about two thousand;) and were drowned in the sea.
14 And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.
15 And they came to Jesus, and saw him that was possessed with the demon, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.
16 And they that saw it told them what had happened to him that was possessed with the demon, and also concerning the swine.
17 And they began to ask him to depart out of their region.
18 And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the demon asked him that he might be with him.
19 But Jesus permitted him not, but said unto him, Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.
20 And he departed, and began to announce in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel [WERE AMAZED].

When the Lord Jesus cast the demons out of the possessed man, into the herd of pigs, showing Himself to be the Son of God. The local people showed their ignorance of God (and His Son Jesus) by being afraid of Him, and by their asking Him to leave their area. While the man delivered from the demons wanted to leave all to go with Christ. Obediently he obeyed Christ and remained and testified to all that God had done for him.

Some people, in their ignorance of God, do not respond to the evidences of God that they personally witness to their eternal damnation.

(This is God’s perspective)

God is a mystery to most people; you must be born again; parable of the sower

In Matthew 13 we are given the parable of The Sower. In verses 10-17 Christ shares what He could see in the hearts and minds of the “great multitudes” that gathered very enthusiastically (outward appearance) to see and hear Him.

Matthew 13:1-2
1 The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.

2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore.

Matthew 13:10-17
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why do you speak unto them in parables?

11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 For whosoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever has not, from him shall be taken away even what he has.
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because seeing they see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, who said, By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive [NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY SEE]:
15 For this people’s heart has become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes THEY HAVE CLOSED; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
17 For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which you see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which you hear, and have not heard them.

Each person of the great multitudes had, according to the Lord, at some point in their lives stopped responding to Him. These Jews knew about God but resisted yielding themselves to Him. They would not yield themselves under His loving authority, and acknowledge Him / obey Him in every part of their lives as He required them to…

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

The Lord Jesus explains how their hearts had become, “gross”, to their nations’ God. “Gross”, means ‘to thicken, to become callous (hardened)’. And that their ears became, “dull of hearing”, meaning that as they continued to hear the teaching of their faith, Moses’ Law – in their synagogues, but that they had stopped listening carefully to learn about how to live righteously before the Lord. In their resisting the Lord they grew bored with being taught the Scriptures! The opposite was true of the men in Berea…

Acts 17:11  “These [Berean men] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

The Lord continues to describe the great multitudes gathered that day as people who, of their own choice, had closed their eyes to the things of God – “their eyes THEY HAVE CLOSED.

Unlike the Lord’s disciples (less Judas) who had yielded all to Him – “But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.” i.e. The Lord’s disciples’ eyes and ears were willingly open to see and hear spiritual truths of God. Therefore only the Lord’s close disciples, in that situation, were born again according to the Lord! (Or steadily moving towards being born again.)

what about you; believe with all of your heart; you must be born again

The reason why most people fall short of becoming children of God is that they either totally resist Him –as those of the country of the Gadarene’s in point 1; or they will only respond with weak faith in Christ. They will not believe with all of their hearts as required by the Lord

Acts 8:36-37
36  And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37  And Philip said, If thou believest WITH ALL THINE HEART, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Only someone who has been saved (Born Again) may be baptized. The Ethiopian eunuch had to believe with all his heart. He was taught that in no uncertain terms. He had to be born again to go through the waters of baptism. Philip accepted the eunuch’s declaration of faith and baptized him.

Does the Lord see only ‘some’ belief in Christ in your heart, or does He see belief in your heart that is ‘with all of your heart’? This is what He requires for you to be saved, to be born again!

will you repent and believe; repentance toward God, and faith toward our lord Jesus Christ

The apostle Paul explained the Lord’s requirements for our salvation with different terms, in order to aid our understanding of the very serious response to Christ that He requires…

Acts 20:20-21
20 And how I [PAUL] kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,
21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, AND faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Repentance toward God, AND faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” … is another way of saying ‘believe [IN CHRIST] with all your heart’. ‘Believing with all of our hearts’ would be: 1. Our being repentant towards God (changing our minds, our attitudes towards Him); our being willing to be totally yielded to Him in all of our life. 2. Leading to our having faith in the Lord Jesus Christ with all of our hearts (Acts 8:37). Are you willing to respond to God’s offer of salvation through Christ as completely as He requires?

And then…

strive to enter; ye must be born again; are only few saved; luke 13:24

Luke 13:23-24
23  Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,

5.1. Many Seekers

Here we are given what the Lord sees in many religious peoples’ personal responses to His reaching out to them. The Lord Jesus tells us that He sees many who are ‘seeking’ to enter into the kingdom of God (to be saved / to be born again). They want to be saved / born again. They want to go to Heaven when they die.

From the human perspective, we see lots of religious people in the world around us. We see lots of people going to the many different types of ‘christian’ churches available.

The Lord looks at all the religious activity, and according to God’s Word, He sees that it is the same as it always has been, and as it always will be in our fallen world: many, many people being careless, and self-centred in their personal responses to Him! The Bible record testifies to this sad reality in its God given accurate historical testimony (Genesis to Revelation). And here in Luke 13 the Lord in very clear terms says that those, “many”, who only, “seek to enter in”, will discover that they were not successful! Mainly, unfortunately, only when they stand before the Lord at judgement after this life, and when they are condemned!

Matthew 7:22-23
22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

See also Matthew 25:31-32; 41-46.

And here the Lord only deals with the ‘many’ who think that they are serving Him. Never mind the greater masses of those who attend church but who never get to do any type of spiritual ministry!

5.2. We Have To STRIVE To Enter The Strait Gate

In Luke 13:24 the Lord’s counsel is for each of us to take Him VERY, VERY SERIOUSLY! We are each required by the Lord to do more than, “seek”, to enter God’s kingdom (be saved / born again). Here the Lord requires that we, “STRIVE to enter in at the strait gate.”! The Lord’s counsel here is not for us to ‘work harder for our salvation’. We cannot earn our salvation no matter how good we are, no matter how busy we are ‘in the Lord’s work’…

Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.

In Luke 13 the Lord is referring to our attitude towards Him. The apostle Paul referred to this very thing in his preaching where he preached that we must, ‘repent toward God, and have faith toward Christ’. We have to stop our careless, self-centred, attitude towards the Lord! He has to become the focus of our lives! HE MUST be the most important One to us! More important to us than our families, our jobs, our friends, our churches, our spiritual leaders! More important than our personal ambitions in life! He MUST become the focus of our lives! And that takes more than our ‘seeking’ to accomplish, it takes STRIVING! We need to be able to say with Paul, “For to me to live is Christ.”! (Philippians 1:21). i.e. My life is ALL about Christ, life is all about His purposes! People who only ‘seek’ are only prepared to ADD Christ to their personally arranged lives. They will NOT make Him the centre and focus of their lives! And this is why the Lord says that THEY CANNOT ENTER! They are not able to turn from putting themselves first, and giving that place to Christ! And so they CANNOT enter God’s kingdom, they CANNOT be saved, they WILL NEVER be born again! Unless they realise their need and beg the Lord to help them to repent toward Him! Repent toward Him and put Him first before everyone, and everything! And have whole hearted faith in Christ!

The reality is that the Lord can see ahead that most of us will not get this right! Make sure that you are not one of this group of ‘many’!

born again; ye must be born again; born of the Spirit

The Bible doesn’t teach us to pray a short pray that will ensure that we are saved, or born again. None of the examples in the New Testament demonstrate a prayer required for us to be saved…

  • Nicodemus – John 3:1-21
  • The Woman at the Well – John 4:1-43
  • The Rich Young Ruler – Mark 10:17-27
  • Zacchaeus – Luke 19:1-10
  • The Ethiopian Eunuch – Acts 8:26-39
  • Lydia – Acts 16:14-15
  • The Philippian Jailer – Acts 16:23-40
  • The Athenians – Acts 17:14-34

What the Bible does teach is that our spiritual birth is of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit…

John 3:1-6
1 ¶ There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water [PHYSICAL BIRTH] and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh
[PHYSICAL BIRTH]; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

It is the Holy Spirit Who brings about our spiritual birth. In John 3:5 & 6 the Lord Jesus explains God’s requirement that we MUST be born of the Spirit in order to enter the Kingdom of God / become a child of God (John 1:12). When the person sharing the Gospel with us, together with the Holy Spirit, convinces us to be repentant towards God, and have whole-hearted faith in Christ (Acts 20:21, 8:37; 1 Corinthians 3:6-9). The Holy Spirit, Who sees in our hearts and minds, IF He witnesses that we are indeed ‘repentant toward God’, and do indeed have ‘whole-hearted faith in Christ’, instantly brings about our spiritual birth into the kingdom of God and we are born again!

For your part: you need to acknowledge, believe, that yes you do see your desperate need for salvation through Christ to save you from the penalty (wages) of sin (Romans 6:23). And that yes you are willing to yield your all – your whole life – to Almighty God (be repentant toward God – Acts 20:21). The question today is … are you so thoroughly convinced of your need to take the Lord very, very seriously, that you do believe in Christ with all your heart? If so, then trust Him to:

  • Witness your being repentant towards Himself
  • And that you do believe in Christ’s death – for your sin, and His resurrection from the dead with all your heart
  • Do His part and bring you to being born again – to be born of the Spirit

The spiritual birth brings about a complete change in all who are born again. They will change dramatically! In some ways immediately, but they will be changed in every area of their life as time passes…

2 Corinthians 5:17  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

So how will you know when you have been born again?

7.1. By The Inner Witness Of The Holy Spirit

witness of the Holy Spirit; assurance of salvation

Romans 8:9 – Every child of God has the Holy Spirit dwelling / living within them.

Romans 8:9  “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Romans 8:14-16
14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby [THROUGH WHOM] we cry, Abba, Father.
16  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Verse 14 teaches us that those who are actually led by the Holy Spirit are sons (or daughers) of God. They are led to be repentant toward God, and have whole hearted faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21). How do children of God really know that they are led by the Holy Spirit? The rest of this presentation gives specific details of how those who have been born again will know that they are indeed born again, and how to make sure that they are continually being led by the Holy Spirit…

Verse 15 tells us that by the Holy Spirit God’s children will identify the Lord as their divine Parent – their Father – with godly love. And so part of the Spirit’s witness that they have been born again is that He brings them to love Almighty God as their Father. If you have been born again you will regard the God of the Bible as your loving Father. This affection will grow over time, but you will really care about pleasing Him through obedience to Him, as instructed through the Bible.

Verse 16 assures us that the Holy Spirit witnesses with God’s children’s spirit that they are the children of God. This verse speaks of an inner assurance that the Holy Spirit gives them that they have been born again. By His inner witness those who have been born again WILL KNOW in their hearts and minds that they are secure in Christ – that they have been born again.

They will change dramatically as time passes…

2 Corinthians 5:17  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

walking after the Spirit; not walking after the flesh

When someone is completely yielded to God their life will change dramatically. As they learn God’s will they will adjust in adding to their lives all that they learn that a child of God is responsible to their Father to do. They will turn from all that they learn in the Scriptures that their Father tells them to stop doing.

1 John 2:3-6
3 ¶ And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he
[JESUS] walked.

Keeping the Lord’s commandments as led by the Holy Spirit will affect every part of those who have been born again’s lives. As one would expect the Holy Spirit will lead the obedient child of God to their Saviour’s commands: Those given directly by Him, and those given through His disciples / apostles, recorded in the New Testament epistles – Acts through Revelation. Those commandments include…

Bible Study

The command to study…

2 Timothy 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

The Bible was given by God to teach His children EVERYTHING they must know about their spiritual life with Him in this world…

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Bible study will, for example, enable God’s children to see from Scripture exactly how to be born again, and how to personally know assurance of salvation. How to make certain that their souls are indeed secure in Christ…

2 Peter 1:10  “Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:”

And rather than the sinful world around them, their cultures, shaping them (their hearts and minds), the reading and careful Spirit led study of God’s Word will shape their hearts and minds to value all that their Father values, and be against all that their Father is against.

Time Management

1 Corinthians 10:31 “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”

Ephesians 5:15-16
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Colossians 4:5 “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 gives the broad principle of doing, “all to the glory of God.” This command doesn’t leave out any area of our lives. In everything that we do, we are to do those things ‘to the glory of God. Even the little, plain things of eating and drinking to take care of our bodies are to be done to the glory of God.

Ephesians 5:16 and Colossians 4:5 both command God’s children not to waste time. Their purpose in this world – ‘taking the Gospel to the lost’, and ministering amount fellow children of God – is their life’s priorities from their Father (Mark 16:15; Ephesians 4:11-16 specifically v16). God’s children are to use their time wisely…

“Redeeming the time”, is using our time well / wisely, not wasting it on things that don’t matter for eternity. The Holy Spirit will teach us which things are eternal, and matter. He will teach us to highly value eternal matter as the Lord does. And just which things we as individuals must be involved in with our limited time each week, and each day. And so certain things will go from our week, while other things will be added, according to the Holy Spirit’s leading. All according to the commands of God to His children in the Bible. Commands that those who have been born again WILL highly value.

Godly Friends

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

V14/ God’s children are commanded not to be, “unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” Being, “unequally yoked”, would be joined in the same burden as two oxen yoked together in plowing a farmer’s field. God’s children are not permitted by the Lord to join with, “unbelievers”, – any not born again, in a common cause. Joining together in business, in close friendship, in marriage, etc.

V14-16/ Examples of why this will be obviously a bad, an un-natural thing for those born again. It would be like joining…

  • Righteousness with unrighteousness
  • Light with darkness
  • Christ with Belial / satan
  • A believer with an infidel (faithless person)
  • The OT temple of God with idols

V17-18/ Based on those who have been born again’s obedience to be separate from unbelievers, determines whether of not the Lord will receive them into a practical Father-to-son / Father-to-daughter relationship with Him. The disobedient child of God (born again) will always be a child of God, but they will not know the blessedness of having an intimate relationship each child of God should have with their heavenly Father.

7v1/ The commands, and promises for ‘obedience to the commands’, should give those who have been born again irresistable motivation to keep themselves holy / pure before their Father.

The Lord even commands those who have been born again to, “withdraw”, themselves from others who have been born again, who continually walk / live in disobedience. Disobedience relating to moral righteousness, as well as doctrinal purity (“tradition which he received of us”)…

2 Thessalonians 3:6  “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition [DOCTRINE / TEACHING] which he received of us.”

In Public Life, As Well As In Private

Public Life…

Colossians 4:5-6
5 ¶ Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
6  Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

Walking in wisdom towards, or with, those who have not been born again, redeems time. Meaning that, as written in verse 6 – which describes a wise, time redeeming walk / life in the company of those who have not been born again: 1. “Speech be always with grace” – kind even when undeserved; 2. “Seasoned with salt” – non-provocative. Don’t offend carelessly. And so keeping / building good relations with the lost, simply by being gracious and wise before them when they see you in public, so that the ‘door’ to sharing the gospel is always kept open. Where ungracious speech, and behaviour, closes the door for God’s children to be able share the Gospel.

Private Life…

Romans 8:9-16
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 ¶ And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

V9/ Everyone born again has the Spirit of Christ (Holy Spirit – see also v11) literally living within them.

V14/ The major purpose for the Holy Spirit living within those who have been born again, is to give them personal guidance – “led by the Spirit of God”.

V12-13/ Those who have been born again MUST NOT live after (according to) their sinful flesh (the sinful lusts / passions of their flesh. 2 John 2:15-17 gives a break down of the flesh in describing those not born again, collectively called, “the world”.

1 John 2:15-17
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world [LITERALLY THOSE NOT BORN AGAIN IN THE WORLD].
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

V15/ Describes how our world (those not born again) are living in conflict with God.

V16/ Describes the world of unsaved (not born again) describing them by their fleshly corruption: 1. “lust of the flesh” – sinful passions of their bodies; 2. “lust of the eyes” – sinful passions for what they see others have; 3. “the pride of life” – sinful pride

V17/ The reality, from the Lord’s view point, of how the sinful ways of the world of those not born again will be brought to an end. i.e. There is no future for those living according to their sinful flesh. Unlike those who have been born again, and who live after the will of God – which is literally living according to the leading of the Holy Spirit in their daily walk / life with their Father. And, at the same time, resisting the inner corruption of their flesh to live as they please, according to their own selfish ambition.

Summing Up

Together with the inner witness of the Holy Spirit with all who have been born again, is the ‘growing’ witness of the inner working of the Holy Spirit IF the individual child of God walks after he leading of the Holy Spirit. Who will teach them to not walking after their sinful flesh, but will rather walk after the inner leading Holy Spirit. Who will lead the obedient child of God in all areas of the life. Effectively leading them to obey all the commands of Christ given in Scripture. The commands of Christ that the child of God will learn to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to correctly understand. This passionate striving to obey the Lord in all things, to obey all of His commandments, will be another testimony that they are indeed born again.

See below for a more detailed chart of the Spiritual Life as taught in the Bible. This chart pictures and summarizes the spiritual road ahead. The Spiritual road with the Lord that the Holy Spirit will strive to lead / guide you into. And knowing the details of the spiritual life will greatly benefit you in knowing what to expect, and enable you to intelligently co-operate with Holy Spirit. The chart may be a bit overwhelming to some when first looked at, but one of the realities of the spiritual life is that nothing of value is learnt, or achieved overnight.

As an introduction…

The chart is divided into two sections. The right half is the spiritual progress that the Holy Spirit will be attempting to lead each child of God through, in order to get them to spiritual maturity – to be more and more like Christ. The left half is the carnal spiritual life of the child of God who does get saved / born again, but is very inconsistent in their spiritual walk. Just as Paul rebuked the Corinthian church believers of being, when he told them that they should be teacher’s of God’s Word, but they were spiritual babies who still needed to be taught the basic truths. They are the typical, “lukewarm”, believer that Christ warns about as the usual in these last days (Revelation 3:15-16 KJV).
