How George Muller Started His Day

Psalms 119:147  I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

George Mueller (1805-1898) is famous for establishing orphanages in England and for joyfully depending on God for all his needs. How did he kindle this joy and faith? In 1841 he made a life-changing discovery.

“While I was staying at Nailworth, it pleased the Lord to teach me a truth, irrespective of human instrumentality, as far as I know, the benefit of which I have not lost, though now…more than forty years have since passed away.

The point is this: I saw more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord. The first thing to be concerned about was not, how much I might serve the Lord, how I might glorify the Lord; but how I might get my soul into a happy state, and how my inner man might be nourished. For I might seek to set the truth before the unconverted, I might seek to benefit believers, I might seek to relieve the distressed, I might in other ways seek to behave myself as it becomes a child of God in this world; and yet, not being happy in the Lord and not being nourished and strengthened in my inner man day by day, all this might not be attended to in a right spirit.

Before this time my practice had been, at least for ten years previously, as an habitual thing, to give myself to prayer, after having dressed the morning. Now I saw, that the most important thing I had to do was to give myself to the reading of the Word of God and to meditation on it, that thus my heart might be comforted, encouraged, warned, reproved, instructed; and that thus, whilst meditation, my heart might be brought into experimental, communion with the Lord. I began therefore, to meditate on the New Testament, from the beginning, early in the morning.

The first thing I did, after having asked in a few words the Lord’s blessing upon His precious Word, was to begin to meditate on the Word of God; searching, as it were, into every verse, to get blessing out of it; not for the sake of the public ministry of the Word; not for the sake of preaching on what I had meditated upon; but for the sake of obtaining food for my own soul. The result I have found to be almost invariably this, that after a very few minutes my soul has been led to confession, or to thanksgiving, or to intercession, or to supplication; so that though I did not, as it were, give to prayer but to meditation, yet it turned almost immediately more or less to prayer.

When thus I have been for awhile making confession, or intercession, or supplication, or have given thanks, I go on to the next words or verse, turning all, as I go on, into prayer for myself or others, as the Word may lead to it; but still continually keeping before me that food for my own soul is the object of meditation.

The result of this is, that there is always a good deal of confession, thanksgiving, supplication, or intercession mingled with my meditation, and that my inner man almost invariably is even sensibly nourished and strengthened and that by breakfast time, with rare exceptions, I am in a peaceful if not happy state of heart. Thus also the Lord is pleased to communicate unto me that which, very soon after, I have found to become food for other believers, though it was not for the sake of the public ministry of the Word that I have myself to meditation, but for the profit of my own inner man.

The difference between my former practice and my present one is this. Formerly, when I rose, I began to pray as soon as possible, and generally spent all my time till breakfast in prayer, or almost all the time. At all events I almost invariably began with prayer… But what was the result? I often spent a quarter of an hour, or half an hour, or even an hour on my knees, before being conscious to myself of having derived comfort, encouragement, humbling of soul, etc.; and often after having suffered much from wandering of mind for the first ten minutes, or a quarter of an hour, or even half an hour, I only then began really to pray.

I scarcely ever suffer now in this way. For my heart being nourished by the truth, being brought into experimental fellowship with God, I speak to my Father, and to my Friend (vile though I am, and unworthy of it!) about the things that He has brought before me in His precious Word.

It often now astonished me that I did not sooner see this. In no book did I ever read about it. No public ministry ever brought the matter before me. No private intercourse with a brother stirred me up to this matter. And yet now, since God has taught me this point, it is as plain to me as anything, that the first thing the child of God has to do morning-by-morning is to obtain food for his inner man.

As the outward man is not fit for work for any length of time, except we take food, and as this is one of the first things we do in the morning, so it should be with the inner man. We should take food for that, as every one must allow. Now what is the food for the inner man; not prayer, but the Word of God; and here again not the simple reading of the Word of God, so that it only passes through our minds, just as water runs through a pipe, but considering what we read, pondering over it, and applying it to our hearts….

I dwell so particularly on this point because of the immense spiritual profit and refreshment I am conscious of having derived from it myself, and I affectionately and solemnly beseech all my fellow-believers to ponder this matter. By the blessing of God I ascribe to this mode the help and strength which I have had from God to pass in peace through deeper trials in various ways than I had ever had before; and after having now above forty years tried this way, I can most fully, in the fear of God, commend it. How different when the soul is refreshed and made happy early in the morning, from what it is when, without spiritual preparation, the service, the trials and the temptations of the day come upon one!”

187 THE SPIRITUAL LIFE – HOW TO ACHIEVE THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN – 156

The Lord has given us His Word in order for us to know with certainty what life with Him is in reality. And with our world so far from God with endless mixed ideas of Who He is, and what His Truth is in all matters. We MUST do a responsible study of the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15-16), relying on the Spirit’s leading (Romans 8:14), in order to learn God’s perspective of life – His Truth!

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

‘Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom’, From The LORD, Leads To The Reality Of ‘Life With, And Through The LORD’

The LORD wants His children to know Him and get His view, His values of all things. Once a child of God has been brought to understand, to know, “the fear of the LORD”. Then, they have the right view, the right attitude towards Him that they will pursue Biblical knowledge appropriately. As before noted, not just to learn whatever understanding they get as they study, but to pursue God’s Truth that HE intends to communicate through His Word. The specific truths that He gave to be recorded in His Word, that through the illuminating (opening of understanding) work of the Holy Spirit they may discover (1 Corinthians 2:6-16 KJV).

The ‘wisdom, knowledge and understanding’ that LORD reveals through His Word, and through the crucial illuminating ministry of the Holy Spirit, are made up of what Christians have historically called the ‘basic doctrines of the Christian Faith’…

  • Theology – what the Bible teaches about God
  • Christology – what the Bible teaches about Christ
  • Pneumatology – what the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirit
  • Anthropology – what the Bible teaches about man
  • Soteriology – what the Bible teaches about salvation
  • Hamartiology – what the Bible teaches about sin
  • Ecclesiology – what the Bible teaches about the Church
  • Bibliology – what the Bible teaches about the Bible
  • Eschatology – what the Bible teaches about prophecy and the end times
  • Angelology – what the Bible teaches about angels and satan

These doctrines, teachings, and commands of God are spread throughout the Bible, and the whole Bible needs to be examined in the light of each of these basic doctrines, in order to discover the truths of what the LORD reveals about each. The fear of the LORD will drive the honest child of God to pursue the truth of each doctrine / subject. They won’t be satisfied that their denomination, or their local church, teaches ‘x, y and z’, and therefore they blindly BELIEVE ‘x, y and z’. No! The Spirit led child of God will pursue the Truth that is in the mind of Almighty God, and revealed by Him through the Bible, His Word!

The LORD’s Goal Of Leading His Children To Being Spiritually Minded

As far as God’s children’s spiritual growth toward becoming more and more spiritually minded is concerned. The Holy Spirit achieves that, as we have seen, as they walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit (Romans 8:1-17 KJV). The Holy Spirit will teach, the teachable child of God how to daily, “through the Spirit … mortify the deeds of the body” [PUT TO DEATH; BREAK THE POWER / CONTROL OF SIN], (Romans 8:14). Thus achieving two vital spiritual goals of Romans 8: 1) The practical reality of not walking after the flesh, but actually walking after the Spirit; 2) Purifying their daily walk, ‘“that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled”, in them’. Which also may be stated as their learning to live holy, and purely, like their God and Saviour.

As we have seen being, “spiritually minded”, involves quite a few spiritual truths. All relating to their gaining ‘knowledge, understanding and wisdom’ of God from His Word. (What it means in daily practice to not walk after the flesh, but rather to walk after the Spirit; etc.) All of which describes the character of Christ. Which, looking ahead, we want to further examine in terms of the, “spiritually minded”, child of God’s ‘Christ like character’. This is important as being, “spiritually minded”, is not ‘majoring’ in some areas of the spiritually life, while ‘minoring’ in others; or taking certain commands of the LORD seriously, while neglecting other commands. In Galatians we are given what could be called ‘the finer details’ of being, “spiritually minded”

Galatians 5:22-23
22  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23  Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

“The fruit of the Spirit”, may be called ‘virtues’ that will be found in God’s children who ARE being led by the Holy Spirit. As the Spirit led child of God grows so will the, “fruit of the Spirit”, virtues become more and more evident in them…

  • Love – unselfish, godly love; Love, whether used of God or man, is an earnest and anxious desire for and an active and beneficent interest in the well-being of the one loved (Thayer dictionary).
  • Joy – cheerfulness, that is, calm delight (Strong dictionary)
  • Peace – quietness or rest of mind; not being troubled by the conscience
  • Longsuffering – patience
  • Gentleness – moral goodness, integrity (Strong dictionary)
  • Goodness – uprightness (consistent integrity/honesty) of heart and life (Thayer dictionary)
  • Faith – conviction of the truthfulness of God and of the Christian faith (Strong dictionary)
  • Meekness – a yielding to God; no matter what our natural ability we are to yield to God
  • Temperance – self control

Knowing The Reality Of “The Fear Of The LORD” Opens The Way To ‘Knowledge’ And ‘Wisdom’ From The LORD

Proverbs 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

… is expanded on in Proverbs 2…

Proverbs 2:1-5
My son, IF thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
2  SO THAT thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3  Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
4  IF thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
THEN shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

(Previously…)

Why study, “the fear of the LORD”? – Because the Lord says that a right attitude towards Him is required for His children to gain ‘knowledge’. Meaning accurate ‘spiritual knowledge’ from Him, through His Word.

The required passion for God’s Truth, for ‘wisdom, understanding, and knowledge’, only comes to God’s children who respond to the inner working of the indwelling Holy Spirit with integrity, and who thereafter walk with Him uprightly! (Consistent integrity). As wonderfully exemplified by king David.

(Continuing…)

The LORD gives His children more insight as we move on through chapter 2 of Proverbs…

“Find The Knowledge Of God” – Proverbs 2:5b

Proverbs 2:5-6
5  Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
6  For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Up to this point we have established that the LORD’s command for His children to study His Word, and thereby become spiritually minded: which is learning correct knowledge of Who and What the LORD is. As well as precisely what the Christian Faith is in the corporate environment of the local church. And also, very importantly, what exactly the spiritual life is between the individual child of God and the LORD in their daily walk with Him. And that the only certain way for any child of God to reach the vital goal of correct, accurate, knowledge from God’s Word is to read, study and meditate in God’s Word with integrity. Which we saw would bring about a powerful, godly passion to discover the Truths (‘knowledge, understanding and wisdom’) only found in God’s Word (Proverbs 2:1-5 KJV). Thus the crucial lesson that the truths of God’s Word will never be found, discovered, by those whose reading, studying and meditation in God’s Word is not done with godly integrity.

When the LORD has won an individual child of God’s heart, mind and soul to respond to Him with integrity, and to live in uprightness (consistent integrity). THEN, according to Proverbs 2:5a,Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD,…”. It is THEN that the LORD has successfully won the heart and mind to the right understanding, has won that child of God to the right godly attitude and thinking towards Himself! So that they truly do have a reverential fear of Him!

And thereafter, through having a godly fear of the LORD, the way is opened for them to, “find the knowledge of God.” This is the ultimate goal of the child of God who is being successfully led by the Holy Spirit! Learning correct, accurate knowledge of the One whom their soul loves. This passion is from the Holy Spirit. And will make sense to those led by the Holy Spirit, because to the LORD, His children learning accurate knowledge of the Himself is more important than ANY other knowledge! Including all the knowledge contained in God’s Word that the child of God is commanded to learn, and that has vital bearing on their worship and service to their LORD. And the learning of all knowledge from God’s Word regarding the Christian Faith also being learnt, their being motivated by their love for their LORD. But the knowledge regarding the LORD Himself is most precious!

And once the child of God allows themselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, and He has led them to know and understand the fear of the LORD. Then the LORD Himself will give them the ‘wisdom, knowledge and understanding’ they need that is contained in God’s Word…

Proverbs 2:6  For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Reaching this stage in their spiritual development will be very significant, as their spiritual Bible education will be managed by the LORD through His indwelling Holy Spirit. Who will open, and teach, God’s Truths as not experienced by the child of God before to the same degree. All because they have met His requirements to learn ‘wisdom, knowledge and understanding’ (the LORD’s perspective) from / through His Word.

To be clear: Having the fear of the LORD the child of God will have the right, godly attitude towards Bible knowledge learnt. Which will drive them on to learn all that they can from God’s Word of their LORD Himself. And as they learn more and more about their LORD, their love for Him will grow. Especially motivating them to know how to correctly worship Him, serve Him, and walk with Him according to His will as revealed in His Word. Learning all that He wants them to know in order to be useful to Him in His purposes in this world. And the child of God with the fear of the LORD in their heart’s and mind’s will pursue accurate understanding of those truths with a passion driven by their growing love for Him.

Integrity In The Study Of God’s Word Exemplified In The Life Of King David

King David had the testimony with the LORD that every child of God should aspire to, should aim for…

Acts 13:22  And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

David, in his personal walk with the LORD, so yielded himself to the LORD, and so valued God’s Word that he spent a lot of time in God’s Word getting to know the LORD, the LORD’s will, and the LORD’s ways. That David’s heart and mind were eventually shaped by God’s Word. Meaning that David himself was changed by God’s Word, David’s life was shaped by God’s Word! And therefore the LORD’s testimony of David that He found David to be, “a man after mine own heart”, and therefore, ‘a man, “which shall fulfil all my will.” In our church age the New Testament Scriptures would call such a child of God ‘Christ-like’, or “spiritually minded”. i.e. The LORD’s ideal of the mature, the blameless child of God.

The reason for David being a man after God’s own heart is Firstly, because of his personal response to the LORD with all of his heart, mind and soul. Then secondly, David’s right heart towards the LORD caused him to value God’s Word very highly, and therefore obey the leading of the Lord to learn all he could about the LORD from His Word, and to learn all that God’s Word taught about the Israel’s relationship with the LORD.

In Psalm 119 king David expressed his great love and appreciation God’s Word, and how much it  meant to Him. Keep in mind that David was a child of God, shaped by God’s Word, which is the reason for Him SO appreciating how priceless God’s Word is to God’s children. This godly appreciation of God’s Word established in his heart and mind through having known, and lived God’s Word…

Psalms 119:2  Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

Psalms 119:4  Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.

David in his passionate study of God’s Word would have learnt of the LORD’s command to keep His Word, His, “precepts diligently”

Deuteronomy 4:1  Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.

Deuteronomy 5:28-29, 32-33
28  And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.
29  O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever! [THE LORD HERE PASSIONATELY EXPRESSES HIS STRONG DESIRE FOR ISRAEL TO KEEP ALL OF HIS COMMANDMENTS, BECAUSE THEN HE WOULD BE ABLE TO BLESS THEM WITH A GLORIOUS LIFE WITH HIM. THEIR DISOBEDIENCE TO HIS WORD, TO HIM,  WOULD PREVENT THAT!]
32  Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. [GOD’S WORD TO BE KEPT EXACTLY AS GIVEN, AND WAS NOT TO BE CHANGED AT ALL!]
33  Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess. [ALL OF GOD’S WORD IS TO BE KNOWN, UNDERSTOOD AND OBEYED IN OUR DAILY WALK.]

David as a godly student of God’s Word would have learnt of the above Scriptures’ very direct command to keep God’s Word, God’s commands exactly as given by Him, and that He commanded that ALL of His commandments had to be kept, obeyed.

Psalms 119:10-13
10  With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. [DAVID’S WALK WITH THE LORD WAS WITH GODLY INTEGRITY!]
11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. [MEMORIZING GOD’S WORD!]
12  Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. [DAVID WANTED THE LORD HIMSELF TO TEACH HIM THE SCRIPTURES, WHICH WOULD ENSURE THAT HE HAD THE TRUTH FROM GOD’S WORD. AND NOT A WRONG PERSONAL UNDERSTANDING OF GOD’S WORD.]
13  With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth. [DAVID WAS DRIVEN TO SHARE GOD’S WORD WITH OTHER, WHOM HE KNEW NEEDED GOD’S WORD JUST AS MUCH AS HE DID!]

Take time to go through the whole of Psalm 119, and notice how David mentions God’s Word in just about every verse, and uses this extended Psalm to express how priceless God’s Word is to him!

(Previously…)

Why study, “the fear of the LORD”? – Because the Lord says that a right attitude towards Him is required for His children to gain knowledge. Meaning accurate spiritual knowledge from Him, from His Word.

Why Is This?

Firstly, because godly, reverential, fear is appropriate towards One Who IS Almighty God…

Secondly, because godly, reverential, fear is required in God’s children before He will guide them into His Truth (Proverbs 1:7). Before He will open the Truths contained in His Word to their hearts and minds…

Thirdly, The required passion for God’s Truth, for ‘wisdom, understanding, and knowledge’, only comes to God’s children who respond to the inner working of the indwelling Holy Spirit with integrity, and who thereafter walk with Him uprightly! (Consistent integrity).

‘Integrity’ is ‘moral innocence’; ‘Uprightness’ means ‘straight’, being ‘consistently morally straight’ as opposed to being ‘consistently morally crooked’. And ‘honest’ or ‘honesty’, which we are more familiar with, meaning ‘morally good’. The following are just three of the Scriptures that we looked at in our studies of these three virtues: Job 1:8; 1 Kings 9:4; 1 Chronicles 29:17

The point of these verses is that they teach us the LORD’s very high value of these virtues because of how vital they are in the development of the child of God’s life, as well as in their daily life with Him. AND THEREFORE ALSO IN THE QUALITY OF THEIR APPROACHING THE STUDYING OF GOD’S WORD!

(Continuing…)

I’m sure that when most of us consider the virtues ‘integrity, uprightness and honesty’ we think of them mainly in terms of morality. Which we only expect to find in a person of unusual moral quality. And this is certainly what the LORD loves to see in His children. But there is more to these virtues than in describing their behaviour in doing what they believe to be right, and in not doing that which they believe to be wrong.

‘Integrity, uprightness and honesty’ also refers to the quality of how they do things. When greeting someone many do so without caring at all whether that person is happy with their life or not. In our rushed world I have found this to be the most common way people greet one another. Asking how they are, and then saying that we are doing well. Even if we are not doing well. We don’t care to get into how they really are doing. And so our asking how they are doing is often done in a less than honest manner.

When the LORD calls man to ‘repent toward God, and have faith toward Christ’, He is calling for repentance and faith that is honest. ‘Repentance toward God’ is not to be done half-heartedly. The required individual’s change of mind, change of thinking, towards God is not a slight change of mind, or thinking, towards God. It is a total change! A change in thinking that will change that person’s entire life…

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Where before repenting toward God, and having faith toward Christ, the person has previously lived – like those around them – primarily only for their own selfish interests. Being the masters of their own lives. But when they have repented towards God, as completely with integrity as He requires of them, then they are led to – for the rest of their lives – yield their lives to Him as, “a living sacrifice”, to God. Allowing Him to shape them, to shape their very thinking, their minds, to His ways, and to His values…

Romans 12:1-2
1  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Such a walk with the LORD, such complete obedience to Him, is the kind of repentance toward Himself that He requires, which is a response to Him of integrity. A response that takes Almighty God seriously, a response of the whole person, a response of the heart, mind and soul!

Why did the Lord create man? According to what the Lord has revealed to us through His Word, the Bible, man was created to have life with Him. That they would have a full, secure and purposeful life with their Creator. So that those who CHOOSE life WITH Him, would learn to know Him, and therefore love Him with all of their being. And motivated by love, glorify Him in all that they do.

Knowing The Reality Of “The Fear Of The LORD” Opens The Way To ‘Knowledge’ And ‘Wisdom’ From The LORD

(From last time…)

Why study, “the fear of the LORD”? – Because the Lord says that a right attitude towards Him is required for His children to gain knowledge. Meaning accurate spiritual knowledge from Him, from His Word.

Why Is This?

Firstly, because godly, reverential, fear is appropriate towards One Who IS Almighty God…

Secondly, because godly, reverential, fear is required in God’s children before He will guide them into His Truth. Before He will open the Truths contained in His Word to their hearts and minds. We will still develop this point further as we go…

The following are just three of the Scriptures that we looked at in our studies of these three virtues…

(Continuing…)

The point of these verses is that they teach us the LORD’s very high value of these virtues because of how vital they are in the development of the child of God’s life, as well as in their daily life with Him. AND THEREFORE IN THE QUALITY OF THEIR APPROACHING THE STUDYING OF GOD’S WORD!

When the LORD brought the most committed, the most developed, the most spiritually minded child of God to satan’s attention, the LORD pointed out the virtues in Job that He most valued in child of God…

Job 1:8  And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Did you notice that ‘fearing God’ was in the above list of what the LORD most valued in godly Job, along with his being ‘upright’?

When Solomon was to take the throne of Israel in place of his aging father David, the LORD challenged Solomon with the virtues in his father that enabled him to have a life of fellowship with the LORD. As well as to be useful to the LORD in the priceless ministry of leading Israel to keep His commandments in the Law…

1 Kings 9:4  And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments:

When Solomon was made king of Israel, his father king David prayed the prayer of a truly godly man! Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-21. And in that godly prayer king David acknowledges the truth that the LORD examines peoples’ hearts (their passions), “triest the heart”, and that He, Almighty God, has pleasure – is not just pleased – but has pleasure in finding, “uprightness”!

1 Chronicles 29:17  I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.

Folks, it is precious knowing what the LORD says is right, but to learn what He takes great pleasure in? That is far greater! That is special! AND WE MUST TAKE SPECIAL NOTE…

How do these virtues of ‘integrity’, ‘uprightness’ and ‘honesty’ fit into our study? They fit in because it takes a child of God responding to their Father with ‘integrity’, ‘uprightness’ and ‘honesty’ in their personal walk with Him, for them to be led by His indwelling Spirit to the pursuit of ‘wisdom’, understanding’ and ‘knowledge’, “as silver, and … as for hid treasures”! During that part of our study in Proverbs 2, did you perhaps wonder what gets a child of God to be so passionate for God’s Truth in His Word, for the ‘wisdom’, understanding’ and ‘knowledge’ that God’s Word contains? It all boils down to the quality of their personal response to the LORD! The quality of their personal response to Him when they learn of His will in their lives. Do you respond to learning the LORD’s will for your life as enthusiastically, as passionately, as Almighty God deserves from a child of His? Or do you treat Him as you would anyone else who attempts to tell you what you should and shouldn’t do? You ‘think about it’ … and then ‘perhaps’ respond positively to what they have said to you! This is what makes our LORD so disgusted with His children in these last days! They are lukewarm toward Him! (Revelations 3:15-17 KJV). They are neither passionately against Him, nor passionately committed to Him – ‘cold or hot’. They are in the uncommitted ‘in-between’ – lukewarm! Deciding day by day, situation by situation IF they will obey what they know of His will for them! Folks in such a disgusting walk with the LORD, the Holy Spirit will never get such children of God to be passionate toward their Father! Nor will the Holy Spirit be able to build a greater and greater passion for properly learning all that the child of God needs to know from the Scriptures! This is why we do not passionately search God’s Word for ‘wisdom, understanding, and knowledge’ as for silver and hidden treasure! And thereby be given to, “understand the fear of the LORD”, and thereafter gain the greater prize of ‘finding, “the knowledge of God (Himself) ’, in our studies of His Word!

Knowing The Reality Of “The Fear Of The LORD” Opens The Way To ‘Knowledge’ And ‘Wisdom’ From The LORD

(From last time…)

SUMMING UP

In recapping our earlier studies, we’ve asked the question: ‘Why study, “the fear of the LORD”?’ In answering that question we’ve asked the additional question: ‘Why read, study and meditate in God’s Word?’ The following points give our answers from summing up so far…

  • Because we have been commanded to do so in God’s Word (1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; Joshua 1:8 KJV)
  • Because the Scriptures are the Word of God, the actual Words of God – every one of them! (2 Timothy 3:16 KJV)
  • Because God’s Word gives us the Lord’s view, the Lord’s mind, on all things
  • Because the Church has God’s Truths for the Church in the New Testament
  • Because God’s Word is literally God’s Word’s in the hands of God’s children

Then, ‘Why study, “the fear of the LORD”?’ – Because the Lord says that a right attitude towards Him is required for His children to gain knowledge. Meaning accurate spiritual knowledge from Him, from His Word.

Why Is This?

Firstly, because godly, reverential, fear is appropriate towards One Who IS Almighty God…

(Continuing…)

Secondly, because godly, reverential, fear is required in God’s children before He will guide them into His Truth. Before He will open the Truths contained in His Word to their hearts and minds…

(Continuing where we left off a couple of weeks ago…)

What we are initially taught in Proverbs 1:7…

Proverbs 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

… is expanded on in Proverbs 2 that we just began to look at a couple of weeks ago…

Proverbs 2:1-5
1  My son, IF thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
SO THAT thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
3  Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
IF thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
THEN shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

Verses 1-2, The person who gets to, understand the fear of the LORD”, according to the LORD, is the one -who has responded to the LORD decisively in their heart and mind. And therefore they are willing ‘to, “receive”, His words’, to be decisively receptive to His Word. And who will, “hide”, His, “commandments”, with them as discovered treasures. Ultimately causing them to be ‘attentive’, ‘unwaveringly focused’, on the wisdom they learn (“incline thine ear unto wisdom”), from the LORD through His Word. And therefore to whole heartedly embrace the discovered ‘understanding’ of life with the LORD.

Verses 3-4, But the, “wisdom”, and, “knowledge”, of God’s Word MUST be single mindedly pursued! … “Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;”!

For people whose ‘faith’ is only one part of their lives, only one of their ‘interests’, what is required of God’s children, as taught in Proverbs 2, will be regarded as fanaticism. ‘Going too far!’ The Church of Christ is not a social club, but the fellowship of God’s children. All of whom, as led by the indwelling Holy Spirit, know themselves to be Citizens of Heaven, and are not comfortable, not committed to their temporary lives in this world. And the study of God’s Word is for the sole purpose of learning to properly understand their God, and Father. To learn accurately how He require for them to worship and serve Him. And very importantly how their daily lives with Him will be. How they are required, how they are able, to live in constant fellowship with Him in all circumstances. And so, learning how to please Him, and how to avoid offending Him, in daily life becomes the priority with them. And therefore all that He calls them to do in Proverbs 2 is willingly, passionately, responded to because of their love for their Saviour and God.

Verse 5, WHEN a child of God has responded to the inner working of the Holy Spirit with obedience, they WILL be led to be committed to the LORD, and WILL value and pursue His Truth – Biblical, “wisdom”, Biblical, “knowledge”, and Biblical, “understanding”, (all in all a ‘Biblical mindset’ – the LORD’s view of all things). Resulting in ‘knowing’, “understanding”, “the fear of the LORD”. Which is needed for the ultimate desire of their hearts, ‘to, “find the knowledge of God.”’ To learn, to accurately learn just Who and What their God and Father is!

Knowing The Reality Of “The Fear Of The LORD” Opens The Way To ‘Knowledge’ And ‘Wisdom’ From The LORD

SUMMING UP

In recapping our earlier studies, we’ve asked the question: ‘Why study, “the fear of the LORD”?’ In answering that question we’ve asked the additional question: ‘Why read, study and meditate in God’s Word?’ The following points give our answers from yesterday to the second question…

(Continuing…)

We then previously saw that how God’s children pursue knowledge from God’s Word determines whether or not they actually succeed in gaining, in actually learning what the Lord wants them to learn from His Word. And there being specific Truths that the Lord communicates through His Word, means that God’s children MUST pursue the specific Truths that the Lord intends to communicate through His Word.

These being particular truths that the Lord has given for the Church, that describe the Church, that give the Churches’ purpose, that describe the daily Spiritual Life of every child of God – is contained in what is called, “the apostles doctrine”

Acts 2:42  And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

These are the doctrines that describe what the Church is, and what the purpose of the Church is. As well as what the practical daily spiritual life of the child of God is. As given by the Holy Spirit to the disciples / apostles, as promised by the Lord Jesus Christ…

John 16:13  Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

“all truth”, being the new doctrines relating to the ‘new thing’ that the Lord was about to begin – The Church. Which was begun on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). And so, in their hands, God’s children have God’s actual Words, and more specifically we have just seen that the Lord has given the Church doctrine. Specific teaching as to what the Church is, and what the Church’s purpose is, and all truth relating to the practical life of each child of God.

And in these, probably ‘last’ of ‘the last days’, God’s children have God’s Word in their hands. And they need to get those Truths out of God’s Word into their understanding, and into their daily lives, and into governing the spiritual ministry that each are called to. And the question may be asked: How does God’s children get to accurately know God’s Truths from His Word? So that the studying child of God doesn’t come away from their study of God’s Word with a personal, private, understanding of the Truths revealed in God’s Word? Which would be an inaccurate understanding of God’s Word, His Truths, that cause them to be out of step, to be in conflict with the Lord, in their faith?

And this is where we brought in the Lord’s answer to accurate knowledge, to correct spiritual knowledge gained from God’s Word…

Proverbs 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The answer to our question is given in Proverbs 1:7. Which is a timeless godly attitude toward the LORD that He has always required of His children. And it is where our first question, in our summing up, where we were in these studies when we left them off a couple of weeks ago, comes from. Which was, ‘why study, “the fear of the LORD”?’ The answer given here is, ‘because, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” i.e. From the LORD’s perspective, or ‘in the mind of the LORD’, His children need to begin with, “the fear of the LORD”, in their spiritual education, in order to gain a right attitude towards Him, right thinking towards Him, before they will be capable of learning correct spiritual ‘knowledge’. And the ‘knowledge’ that matters to the LORD, and to His Spirit led children, is the ‘knowledge’ contained in His Word to them – the doctrine revealed / taught there. We could rightfully say, that we are here being taught, that without, “the fear of the LORD”, in the reading, studying and meditating in God’s Word, that the child of God will not properly, accurately, learn to know the LORD, nor the Faith the child of God is to be living, and serving his God through.

Why Is This?

SUMMING UP

It’s been a couple of weeks since we last had a study in The Spiritual Life studies, on the present mini topic of their, “fear of the LORD”. I’m glad to say that from today, God willing, we will continue this study, starting with a recap of what we have learnt regarding the, “fear of the LORD”, and how it fits into the broad subject that we have been studying ‘The Spiritual Life’…

Why study, “the fear of God / the LORD”?

Looking Back: We have seen the command for God’s children to ‘read, study and meditate in His Word’.

1 Timothy 4:13  Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

2 Timothy 2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Joshua 1:8  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Why ‘read, study and meditate’ in God’s Word?

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

It is only by the Scriptures, the Word of God, that God’s children may learn how to, “be perfect”, ‘complete’, before Almighty God their Father. And as by the Scriptures above we learnt that it is not by casual, occasional reading of God’s Word that God’s children learn how to be, and actually become, “perfect”, before Him. It’s through serious, honest reading of God’s Word. Together with serious, honest studying of God’s Word. Together with serious, honest meditating in God’s Word, “day and night”. This means that God’s Word is so important in the mind of the child of God, for their vital spiritual education, that their minds continually go to the truths that they have been reading and studying. Continually trying to gain a better understanding of those vital truths, and their practical application in life. For their daily walk with their Father.

We’ve also learnt from God’s Word that God’s Word, “scripture”, is, “given by inspiration of God”. Scripture is ‘God breathed’, Scripture are the very words of God. Though written through holy men chosen by the Lord, the Lord was intimately involved to where He is here in 2 Timothy 3:16 said to have been the One to have, “given”, “all scripture by inspiration”. And as we noted originally, the Greek wording behind, “inspiration of God”, gives us precisely what that means. That Scripture, God’s Word, as in the Old Testament, was given word for word by God. And is therefore totally reliable in all that we read in God’s Word. As if the Lord Himself stood before us and instructed us Himself. Giving us His mind on all that we need to know from Him. And is therefore, “profitable for doctrine.” Which is ALL that God’s children MUST understand, believe and live; regarding the Lord Himself and their life with Him in this world.

(Summing up to be continued…)

He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
10  When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
11  Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
12  To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;

When the child of God has responded to the inner working of the Holy Spirit, to be given a passion to know the LORD, His will, and His ways (spoken here as, “knowledge and understanding” – verses 2, 3, 5, 6), the LORD will respond, as we have seen, with giving them – firstly – to, “understand the fear of the LORD.” And secondly, as well as thereafter (Proverbs 1:7) ‘the most important of all, knowledge and understanding”’, – the, “knowledge of God.” Because the child of God, or any individual for that matter, who turns their focus and attention to the LORD with such integrity, will find the LORD responding to them. Any individual who responds whole heartedly to the LORD has done so because of the ministry of the Holy Spirit, Who ‘reproves’, convicts, “the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.” And they have responded to Him. And He has therefore enabled them to, “understand the fear of the LORD, AND find the knowledge of God.” We are given further explanation that ‘this’ child of God has turned to the only source of true, eternal, “knowledge and understanding” – the LORD…

Proverbs 2:6  For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

And the responding child of God will get to be made more and more spiritually minded, as the LORD leads them away from the sinful ways of the world and the flesh, to ‘know’, ‘understand’, and ‘live’ His ways.

Where the responding lost person, the one not born again, will be – if they continue to respond positively, obediently, to the LORD – be led to being born again. And thereafter, as a child of God, to turn away from the sinful ways of the world (1 John 2:15-17 KJV) to the LORD’s ways, and being made more and more spiritually minded, more and more like the LORD.
