010 THE SPIRITUAL LIFE – THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN – 10

The Lord has given us His Word in order for us to know with certainty what life with Him is in reality. And with our world so far from God with endless mixed ideas of Who He is, and what His Truth is in all matters. We MUST do a responsible study of the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15-16), relying on the Spirit’s leading (Romans 8:14), in order to learn God’s perspective of life – His Truth!

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Why did the Lord create man? According to what the Lord has revealed to us through His Word, the Bible, man was created to have life with Him. That they would have a full, secure and purposeful life with their Creator. And that the Lord created them to NEED Him in order to have a full, secure and purposeful life. So that those who CHOOSE life WITH Him, would learn to know Him, and therefore love Him with all of their being. And motivated by love, glorify Him in all that they do.

C. That His Children Would Therefore Love Him With All Of Their Being

1. Old Testament Scriptures (See study 008)
2. New Testament Scriptures (See study 009 – Continued)

There is one more recorded occasion of the Lord discussing this precious subject …

Luke 10:25-28
25  And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
26  He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou?
27  And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
28  And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

The interesting point, in this record, is that although the lawyer was not coming to the Lord to discuss God’s Truth, it is said that he, “tempted him”. We are shown that the priority of the great truth of God’s children loving Him with all of their being, was common knowledge among the Jews – as one would expect.

When God’s children are maturing in their walk with the Lord, and their love for Him is real, and is growing, then there will be a change in the persons themselves. Their view of their lives, their attitude towards life will change more and more…

2 Corinthians 5:14-15
14  For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
15  And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

In the child of God’s walking with their Lord, and experiencing the reality of their love for their Saviour and God growing as they get to know Him better. Their love for Him growing through, as we have seen, ‘the Word of God’, as well as in their ‘personal walk with Him’ as they experience Him in their daily walk. In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul writes of, “the love of Christ constraineth us;…”. i.e. They are strongly motivated by the love of God in their hearts and minds. This being their ‘love for the Lord’, and ‘the love of God’, that has resulted from their walk with the Lord that now ‘constrains’ them. Strongly motivates them! Gives them a passion towards Him, and towards serving Him! That they now considered themselves to be dead to previous, selfish goals that they had for their lives! That they were now dead to those personal, self-indulgent dreams and goals!

In verse 15 Paul continues to expand on this turn around that God’s children experience in their hearts and minds. That motivated by love for the Lord, and that He died for them – a huge act of love, “that they which liveshould not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” What a testimony to the Lord, and to the world around us when we are so changed! When, like the world, we previously lived for ourselves. Now as a child of God they witness the complete change as we now live for Him, and for fulfilling His purposes in this world!

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

We have seen the prime command of God is to love God with all of our being. What further evidence, does God’s Word reveal that, will result from God’s children growing in their love for Him, growing more and more towards the reality of loving Him with all of their being?

1 Timothy 1:5-6
5  Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
6  From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Pure, godly love for God will result in the child of God having godly love, “charity”, from a pure heart in everyday life. The love they demonstrate in their relationships with people, whether in close relationships, or in casual relationships, will be pure and without being tainted by their flesh. They will have a, “good conscience”, before God and man. They will not have anything to feel guilty about, as they deal with the Lord, and people, in godliness that keeps their consciences clear, and at peace. Their faith is real, “of faith unfeigned”. They don’t ‘act’ holy, they are holy. They don’t pretend love for God and faith in Him. They do love Him, and their faith in Him is real! This all starts out from their dealing with God in Truth! They have taken Him seriously! They care more about what He thinks of them, than what people think of them!

I. WHAT IS THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN? (STATED)

The Lord in His Word has revealed man’s purpose for existing, the reason why the Lord created him. We are not left to make of life the best that we can, according to our individual abilities, and according to chance opportunities that present themselves to us. With the Lord, life has guarantees from the Him, that He has declared in His Word, and that He stands behind!

C. That His Children Would Therefore Love Him With All Of Their Being

1. Old Testament Scriptures (See study 008)

2. New Testament Scriptures

Man, and especially God’s children, loving their Creator with all of their being, been so crucial to their life in this world. One would expect this teaching to continue to be presented in the New Testament, as it was in the Old Testament. As the Scriptures record, the Lord Jesus shared this vital truth, on what seems to have been on more than one occasion, in discussions with the Jews…

Matthew 22:36-37
36  Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

When asked, “which is THE great commandment”, the Lord Jesus confirms that man loving God with their whole being is, “THE great commandment”. Meaning that it is the most important of all of God’s commandments to man. Note this commandment is not ‘a’ great commandment, it is ‘the’ great commandment.

Mark 12:28-34
28  And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29  And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
30  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31  And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
32  And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
33  And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34  And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

On another occasion a scribe came to the Lord asking, “Which is the first commandment of all?” And on this occasion the Lord gives a fuller explanation, referring to Deuteronomy 6:4-5, partly in His own words, giving explanation of it’s teaching. It’s teaching of the prime truth that loving God with all of one’s being is, the first commandment of all”, the ‘most important’ commandment of all. Emphasizing this truth with, “There is none other commandments greater than these.” The scribe rightly adding that these ‘first and second’, in priority of all commandments, are greater than, “all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Meaning that loving God, and one’s neighbour, is greater than the important burnt offerings and sacrifices of their Old Testament Faith at that time.

The Lord help, guide, each of us to a better and more appropriate appreciation of the importance of our loving Him with all of our heart, soul and mind. Loving Him with all of our being! And this WILL happen over time to ALL who are honest in their daily, personal responses to the Lord. And who allow Him to lead them into a life with Him, where Christ is their Saviour, and the indwelling Holy Spirit is indeed leading them into a deeper and deeper walk with their God, as each day passes by. Bringing them to the reality of loving their God, their Father, with all of their being.

C. That His Children Would Therefore Love Him With All Of Their Being

When we really get to know someone, and when we discover more and more about them that impresses us. Our view of them, our attitude towards them, changes accordingly. And with the Lord, He wants us to get to know Him so that we would understand just Whom we are dealing with. Some people in their circumstances would often deal with people who are not what they seem at first. And so are weary of people. Others have experiences in places of worship where people are also presenting a false commitment to God. And so our world shapes us, and has a great influence on our expectations of others. And also has a great influence on what kind of people we are. And therefore influences our relationships with others.

And the kind of people we are, and how we interact with people, has a huge influence on how we respond to the Lord. If we are shallow people, and have shallow relationships with people, then we are most likely going to approach the Lord shallowly.

And so the Lord, in His Word, and through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, reaches out to each individual in their endless variety of circumstances. And attempts to lead them to respond to Him with integrity, to respond with all of their hearts. To respond to Him in such a way as to redeem them to Himself, to bring them to be born again, and to become sons and daughters of God.

And a hugely important part of winning the individual to Himself, to bring them to the life that they were created to have with Him. Is bringing those who have been born again to where their attitude towards Him, their love for Him is appropriate for What, and Who He is. And those who have been born again, and who are yielded to Him, WILL be brought to love their Father with all of their being. That is what the Holy Spirit WILL accomplish in those yielded to His leading (Romans 8:14-15 KJV). The Lord, in His Word, is very clear on this matter to those who care: To love their God, their Father with all of their being…

1. Old Testament Scriptures

Deuteronomy 6:5  And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Deuteronomy 10:12  And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

‘Fearing God’ has a lot to do with having the right appreciation for Who the Lord is. That He is Almighty God, and that He has our very existence in His control. That after our brief life in this world, He has our eternal existence in His power. And so while the child of God, who gets to know the Lord, WILL love Him supremely, they will at the same time also be aware that it is Almighty God Who has supreme power over them, that they are dealing with. And so the element of respectful fear is right and appropriate towards Him as well.

Deuteronomy 11:13  And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,

Deuteronomy 30:6  And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

The whole Old Testament communicates this fundamental truth, from beginning to end, as man’s highest calling in their personal respond to their God. There is not greater calling, command in the Old Testament that is higher than this one. That the man love their Creator, that the child of God, love their Father, with all of their being. Anything less, would not be right, would not be appropriate towards the Lord!
