007 THE SPIRITUAL LIFE – THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN – 07

The Lord has given us His Word in order for us to know with certainty what life with Him is in reality. And with our world so far from God with endless mixed ideas of Who He is, and what His Truth is in all matters. We MUST do a responsible study of the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15-16), relying on the Spirit’s leading (Romans 8:14), in order to learn God’s perspective of life – His Truth!

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

___

Why did the Lord create man? According to what the Lord has revealed to us through His Word, the Bible, man was created to have life with Him. That they would have a full, secure and purposeful life with their Creator. And that the Lord created them to NEED Him in order to have a full, secure and purposeful life. So that those who CHOOSE life WITH Him, would learn to know Him, and therefore love Him with all of their being. And motivated by love, glorify Him in all that they do.

I. WHAT IS THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN? (STATED)

The Lord in His Word has revealed man’s purpose for existing, the reason why the Lord created him. We are not left to make of life the best that we can, according to our individual abilities, and according to chance opportunities that present themselves to us. With the Lord, life has guarantees from the Him, that He has declared in His Word, and that He stands behind!

Through the Kingsway Bible School you are welcome to carefully work through the subjects Theology, Christology and Pneumatology, and be guided by the Holy Spirit to better understand just what and Who our Creator is.

b. What We Learn About Him, In Personal Walk, According To What We Have Learnt In Scripture About Him

Once we have been born again, the Holy Spirit will continue to lead us as we continue to yield to Him. And He will manage our spiritual growth and maturity in our new life with Him.

Philippians 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

And as long as we continue to respond to the Holy Spirit’s leading, and oversight of our spiritual development, we will grow in spiritual maturity. And He will bring us to love our God, and not just as our God, but as our Father as well, which He is. And also, very importantly, bring us to KNOW with certainty that we ACTUALLY ARE a son or daughter of God…

Romans 8:14-16
14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

And in this precious new relationship with God, each child of God will learn the most important lesson of all – to know their God and Father. The Holy Spirit will open the teaching of God’s Word to them, as they are taught it, and as they read, study and meditate in God’s Word themselves. (See also Joshua 1:8, 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).

1 Corinthians 2:9-14
9  But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10  But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11  For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13  Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14  But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The Holy Spirit will open to the obedient heart and mind, the things of God that they need to understand of their life in this world with Him. And an important part of their spiritual education will be to get a clearer and clearer, a more and more accurate, understanding of Who their God and Father is. After all, knowing God, and getting to know Him better is what eternal life, being born again, is primarily about…

John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

4. There Are Two Stages Of Learning to Know The Lord

What is the Lord telling us by repeatedly declaring that He wants man to ‘know Him’? Know that He exists? Know that He is a ‘personal God’, that He is not impersonal towards man His prime creature, and unknowable by him? As in all truths of God, we need to know here precisely what the Lord wants us to know about our ‘knowing Him’. Misunderstanding between people can be embarrassing, as well as disastrous. And careless misunderstanding between man and the Lord can have eternal consequences! The first place to turn to understand the Lord’s mind on any subject is, of course, His Word. So far we have seen adequate Scripture of ‘the fact’ that He wants us to know Him. Now we will end this section of our study, making certain that we know how the Lord has provided for us to ‘know Him’ accurately, as HE wants us to, and how we NEED to learn about Him…

a. How The Lord Uses The Scriptures To Reveal Accurate Knowledge Of Himself

Through the written record of the Bible, since the Garden of Eden, and right through to the early days of the Church. We have an abundance of perfect preserved history, of the dealings of God with man, to learn from. Through both the Lord’s dealings with those who have responded to Him, as well as through those who have resisted Him over the ages.

This is through the specific instructions that the Lord has given to His children, as to how life with Him would / must work in the various ages of man’s history. These also teach us so much of what kind of Creator we have, what kind of Father we have if we have been born again.

A lot of the teaching in the Word of God, about Himself, is through the names that He has given for Himself, to His children down through the ages. For example, the Hebrew word ‘Elohim’ used the first time the Lord is referred to as God, in Genesis 1:1, is the Lord’s official name, not personal name. The name that reveals Who He is – God. There is also the lesson here from the fact that Elohim is not singular, nor just two or more in the plural sense – but three or more!

Genesis 1:1  In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And so as the Lord has given man more and more names, and titles, for Himself, He has taught us more and more about Himself. One last example here shows how the Lord gradually taught man more and more about Himself over time…

Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

The careful student of God’s Word would notice what is usually first missed when reading this verse. That the word, “name”, is singular despite three names being listed after it. i.e. Christian baptism is not in the ‘names’ of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. But in the, “name” – singular, “of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.” Meaning that baptism is to be done in the name, ‘Father, Son, and Holy Ghost’. And so, in harmony with Genesis 1:1, Matthew 28:19, further reveals the God given truth of Himself, that He is One God, yet in three Persons. A mystery God’s children will only comprehend in eternity.

And so through His Word, the Lord teaches His children FACTS about Himself, so that our understanding of both ‘what He is’, and ‘Who He is’ as a person, are accurately revealed / taught. Why so much specific detail about Himself in so many pages of His Word? Simply because it is important, to the Lord, that our understanding of Him is accurate, and will thereby guide us to an appropriate, and acceptable, personal response Him. A personal response from man that is both right, and worthy of the Lord, as well as necessary for the life with Him. Necessary for the life that the Lord has made possible between Himself and each of us.

1. The Lord Made Man Capable Of Knowing Him (See study 003)

2. Old Testament Scriptures (See study 003)

3. New Testament Scriptures (See study 004 – Continued)

1 John 4:6-8
We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
7  Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

John writes from the perspective that he, the other apostles, and the believers that he is writing to, “are of God”. And that others that ‘know God’ WILL agree with them (“heareth us”). Those that are, “not of God”, don’t agree with them, or understand them (“heareth not us”). In the context of our study, of ‘knowing God’, in verse 6, it is taught that those who love God will agree with the teaching of the apostles. One of the things that will be common among those who truly know God, is their agreement on what the Scriptures, that declare the Christian Faith, as declared by the apostles in the New Testament, teach. And to be clear, John also addresses this truth from the perspective of those who are not of God – those who don’t know God is the implication here – that they do not agree, understand the apostle’s, nor those who are born again’s, faith / belief.

This division, described by the apostle John, also reveals the, “spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” There are two spirits of influence in the world. The Holy Spirit and satan. Those who are led by the Holy Spirit will be born again. Those who are born again, and continue to yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit, will be those who really get to know God, and life with Him. Both in this world and in the one to come. satan, the “spirit of error”, is the one who influences those who resist the Holy Spirit, and who are against the recorded teaching of the apostles in the Word of God.

Lastly here, John speaks about those who have been born again as being loving. That the unloving person could not know Him as He, “is love”. Understanding the Lord’s view of being loving is important to appreciating what is being said here. Very briefly: Christ is the epitome of love as demonstrated by a human being. Christ was never ‘soppy’, or with out of control emotions, in the way that He loved people. He love for people was influence by His first priority love for the Father. And so when right His love was ‘positive’. Example: When He healed people, He was ministering to them with godly love. There is however, in the love of Christ for the Father, the ‘negative’ side of loving people. Example: When the Jesus rebuked Peter, after Peter rebuked the Him for saying that He would be killed by the Jewish leaders (Mark 8:31-33 KJV). Godly love is both of these.

Again we have a Scripture that emphasizes the importance of truly knowing God as He calls us to.

2. Old Testament Scriptures  (See study 003)

3. New Testament Scriptures

John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

When a lost sinner receives Christ, and is born of the Spirit, they are made a son or daughter of God and given spiritual life (John 3:5-6 KJV). This new spiritual life is life with God through which they will get to know their God and Father. And so getting to know God is natural to one who has been born again. Though it must be stated that it is those who have been born again, and that, “walk after the Spirit” (they are “led by the Spirit”), and do not carelessly, “walk after the flesh”, that get to know their God! (Described in Romans 8:1-16 KJV).

1 Corinthians 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

Paul rebukes the Corinthian believers because some of them did not have, “the knowledge of God”. Their not having the knowledge of God is shameful Paul tells them. This rebuke fits in line with this epistle where we are made aware of the carnality of the Corinthian church (See 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 KJV).

Their lack of personal righteousness, and Paul’s need to rebuke them of continuing in sin, is consistent with those who do not have, “the knowledge of God”. The Corinthian believers were spiritual babies through their lack of spiritual growth. And the result of this carnality is that they did not learn to know God through their personal walk with Him. Their carnality being an offence to God prevented them from getting to know Him better, from Him revealing more about Himself to them.

Paul closes the verse with, “I speak this to your shame.” They were not young in the faith. They had been born again for a period of time already, and it was shameful that they still did not know the Lord as they should. This tells us that it is unnatural for someone to be born again, and not to get to know God. Getting to know the Lord is a natural consequence of being born again and being a, obedient son or daughter of God – i.e. actually having a walk, or life, with Him.

2 Thessalonians 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

The lost who have not obeyed the gospel of Christ will meet Almighty God as judge. They have resisted the wooing of the Holy Spirit to receive Christ and be born again. Paul writes that they don’t know God. The lost not knowing God is to be expected as they have resisted the wooing of the Holy Spirit to receive Christ (John 16:8; 1:12 KJV). Nevertheless, this is another scripture that highlights the fact that certain people don’t know God. And that this is a problem from the Lord’s perspective! These people are resisting His efforts to woo and win them. They are resisting His efforts to lead them to where they can fulfill their reason for being created!

It is also significant that although they know that the Lord exists, they see His work of creation, they are said to not know Him. This tells us that when the Lord speaks of us knowing Him, it has to do with knowing Him as one person, or personality, knows another person, or personality. Where two people really get to know each other. The Lord wants man to know what He is like as a ‘person’ – holy, loving, faithful, forgiving, unchanging, hating sin, etc.

B. That His Children Would Learn To Know Him

By being led by the Holy Spirit into being more and more spiritually minded, obedient children of God, WILL be brought to know their Father…

We are repeatedly told, in the Scriptures, that the Lord wants His children to know Him…

1. The Lord Made Man Capable Of Knowing Him

Genesis 1:26-27
26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The first chapter of Genesis reveals to us that the Lord created man in His own image. Meaning that man is in certain aspects ‘like’ God. The statement partly means that, like God, man has personality, that man has intellect and emotion, we are able to reason and have emotional passions. This likeness in God’s image makes it possible for man to have a meaningful relationship with his Creator. Almighty God and man His creature are able to enjoy one another on a level far beyond that of any other creature on earth. The relationship with God is both intellectual and emotional. Therefore man’s freedom to choose for or against his Creator’s invitation to life with Him is not simple, but complex. When man responds to the Lord with their all their heart, soul and mind, it is therefore significant and meaningful to the Lord (Matthew 22:37 KJV).

2. Old Testament Scriptures

1 Chronicles 28:9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off forever.

In the beginning of Solomon’s reign, David challenges his son with the enormous responsibility he is about to undertake of being king of Israel. The Lord’s representative nation on earth of how wonderful life is with Him as their God. Rightfully David addresses Solomon’s personal walk with the Lord. And the first thing on the list is ‘knowing God’. David, ‘the man after God’s own heart’ (Acts 13:22 KJV), knows what is important to the Lord, and is able to get to the point of what their God required – that we ‘know Him’ and, “serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind”. That is what the Lord is after! David was certainly a Spiritually Minded man!

Jeremiah 9:23-24
23  Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in hismight, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
24  But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

The Lord addresses that which men values the most – “wisdom”, “might” (strength), and “riches”. The Lord’s council is that man glories in that which is the most valuable of all to glory in – ‘understanding and knowing’ Him.

Jeremiah 31:33-34
33  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34  And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Again we see the Lord speaking about people ‘knowing Him’. In the future Millennial Kingdom, one of the glories of that time in the world, is that everyone will ‘know the Lord’. Again it is not hard to see that our knowing Him is important to Him! The Lord does not want to be a mystery to His children. Neither does the Lord want His children to have a mix of right and wrong belief about Him. But to have a correct understanding of Who and what He is.

Hosea 6:1-3
1  Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.
2  After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
3  Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Hosea tells the children of Israel that if they not only “return unto the LORD” – to turn from their sin and idolatry, but “if we follow on to know the LORD”. Then they would know the Lord’s continuous provision (“the latter and former rain”). And so the Lord let Israel know that He was looking for far more than that they acknowledge Him as their God. They were to pursue a life with Him which would bring them to know Him. To know Him as they experience Him in their lives.
