014 THE SPIRITUAL LIFE – THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN – 14

The Lord has given us His Word in order for us to know with certainty what life with Him is in reality. And with our world so far from God with endless mixed ideas of Who He is, and what His Truth is in all matters. We MUST do a responsible study of the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15-16), relying on the Spirit’s leading (Romans 8:14), in order to learn God’s perspective of life – His Truth!

2 Timothy 3:16-17
16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Why did the Lord create man? According to what the Lord has revealed to us through His Word, the Bible, man was created to have life with Him. That they would have a full, secure and purposeful life with their Creator. And that the Lord created them to NEED Him in order to have a full, secure and purposeful life. So that those who CHOOSE life WITH Him, would learn to know Him, and therefore love Him with all of their being. And motivated by love, glorify Him in all that they do.

I. WHAT IS THE LORD’S GOAL FOR MAN? (STATED)

A. That Man Would Have Life WITH Him

  1. Through Christ (See study 001)
  2. Through Christ Only (See study 001)
  3. That Sin Keeps Man From God’s Purpose For Him (See study 001)
  4. Through Christ The First Step Towards God’s Purpose In Man Is Achieved (See study 001)
  5. Through “The Law Of The Spirit Of Life In Christ Jesus” (See study 002)

B. That His Children Would Learn To Know Him

  1. The Lord Made Man Capable Of Knowing Him (See study 003)
  2. Old Testament Scriptures (See study 003)
  3. New Testament Scriptures (See studies 004 – 005)
  4. There Are Two Stages Of Learning to Know The Lord (See studies 006 – 007)

C. That His Children Would Therefore Love Him With All Of Their Being

  1. Old Testament Scriptures (See study 008)
  2. New Testament Scriptures (See study 009 – 010)

D. That Motivated By Supreme Love, His Children Would Glorify Him In All That They Do (See study 011 – Continued)

1. Talking (See study 013)

2. Ministering

1 Peter 4:11  If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified…”. When God’s children minister to others, whether it be to their temporal needs, or their more important spiritual needs, the Lord instructs them to do so, “as of the ability which God giveth”. The goal being for them to serve the Lord according to the gift/s that He has given them. To serve Him where He places them, and according to the ability that He gives them.

The sinful flesh will tempt the child of God to serve other than where, and in what manner that the Lord wants them to serve Him. The temptation may be to serve the Lord where it is convenient for them to serve Him, or to serve Him in a ministry that is convenient for them to serve Him in. Or, they may be tempted to serve Him where there is a ministry that is highly regarded, and that may be beyond their gift/s, their, “ability”, from the Lord.

The Lord, by His indwelling Spirit, will lead to into ministry that He want us to serve Him in. Into the ministry that He has gifted us for. The ministry they He will bless with fruit that is eternal, fruit that remains…

John 15:16  Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

Such spiritual fruit, spiritual success, is achieved through the joint efforts of the Lord and the Spirit led child of God…

1 Corinthians 3:6-9
6  I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
7  So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
8  Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.

In order for there to be eternal spiritual results in any ministry, the Lord must bless with, “increase”. Only the Lord can bring about the salvation of the soul (John 16:8; 3:6 KJV), and only the Lord can open the understanding of His children being taught His Word, or being challenged by the preaching of His Word. The ministering child of God MUST do their part, as led by the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit MUST do the inner heart and mind working in the person being ministered to, and bring the spiritual, “increase”. The Holy Spirit MUST do the spiritual enlightening of their heart and mind, He MUST convince the person being ministered to, to respond obediently to the Word of God. To respond obediently because of their obedient, repentant, attitude towards the Lord in their personal walk.

And after all is said and done, the goal, of the Spirit led child of God in their ministering, is to bring glory to their Heavenly Father, “that God in all things may be glorified”. And when ministering children of God follow their sinful flesh, instead of the leading of the Holy Spirit, then there is no blessing with, “increase”, by the Holy Spirit in their ministry. Which is essential for the salvation of lost souls, and the edifying of God’s children.

And so, in order for God’s children to minister to others, and bring glory to Him in their ministering, they MUST do so according to the Word of God, “the oracles of God”. As well as according to the, “ability which God giveth”, or their efforts will not bring glory to the Lord that is so important to Him, as well as to the Spirit led child of God.

D. That Motivated By Supreme Love, His Children Would Glorify Him In All That They Do (See study 011 – Continued)

In Colossians 3 the Lord, through Paul, further instructs His children in the Spiritual Life, in how to live out their love for Him in their daily walk / life with Him…

Colossians 3:16-24
16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
18  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
19  Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
20  Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
21  Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
22  Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:
23  And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
24  Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

Verse 16, the Spiritual Life of God’s children is not according to their best intentions, or their spiritual leader’s beliefs, but according to the Word of God…, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you”. When we love the Lord we will want to please Him, as HE has said we must in His Word.

Verse 17, is a vital Scripture for our lesson, highlighting the Lord’s command that His children do all things to His glory. Here Paul writes that all things, what we say as well as what we do, MUST ALL be done, “in the name of the Lord Jesus.” This is the same command as ‘doing all to the glory of God’. Therefore: How do I sit in the front of a television, watching the filthy entertainment of the world – in the name of Christ? How do I spend lots of my time in ungodly company, each week, comfortable with their worldly wickedness – in the name of Christ? How do I dress in a sensual, world manner – in the name of Christ? How do I neglect spending time with the Lord in prayer, and in His Word – in the name of Christ? How do I continually resist the attempts of the Holy Spirit to lead me in my spiritual walk – in the name of Christ? Etc. etc. etc.. No child of God can! Not if they want peace of mind, and the joy of the Lord in their spiritual lives! Not if they care about pleasing Him!

Verses 18-22, lists a cross section of society that all of us fit into, giving examples of how that in these various relationships, we don’t please ourselves, we don’t live according to our sinful flesh, or according to the ways of the world, but we rather, “in singleness of heart, fearing God”, we seek to please Him. To please Him Whom we love above all else!

Verses 23-24, Paul here sums up the matter: That we are to do all things to the Lord’s glory, and not grudgingly – as someone forced to do something against their will, but to, “do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”. The child of God who has known the reality of spiritual growth in their life with the Lord, and is truly growing in their love for the Lord, WILL easily be obeying Him heartily, willingly, eagerly! Anything for their Heavenly Father!
