26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, FEAR NOT, MARY: FOR THOU HAST FOUND FAVOUR WITH GOD.
31 AND, BEHOLD, THOU SHALT CONCEIVE IN THY WOMB, AND BRING FORTH A SON, AND SHALT CALL HIS NAME JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, HOW SHALL THIS BE, SEEING I KNOW NOT A MAN?
35 AND THE ANGEL ANSWERED AND SAID UNTO HER, THE HOLY GHOST SHALL COME UPON THEE, AND THE POWER OF THE HIGHEST SHALL OVERSHADOW THEE: THEREFORE ALSO THAT HOLY THING WHICH SHALL BE BORN OF THEE SHALL BE CALLED THE SON OF GOD.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 AND MARY SAID, BEHOLD THE HANDMAID OF THE LORD; BE IT UNTO ME ACCORDING TO THY WORD. And the angel departed from her.
What a godly women! Mary must have known that she was endangering her imminent marriage to Joseph by her getting pregnant with the Lord Jesus! She would have realized that she would be frowned upon by others for being pregnant outside of marriage! Yet she yields whole heartedly to the Lord to be used by Him in this incredible way. And she trusted the Lord to take care of her future! The picture illustrates Mary’s attitude of being completely yielded to the Lord and His will for her.
Luke 1:38 “AND MARY SAID, BEHOLD THE HANDMAID OF THE LORD; BE IT UNTO ME ACCORDING TO THY WORD. And the angel departed from her.”
Understandably Joseph is not impressed that his fiancé has been found pregnant before their marriage. The Lord does not leave this godly man in the dark…
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
This is what Christians are celebrating each 25th December. Not the actual day that the Lord Jesus was born, but the day that Christians have set aside to yearly thank the Lord for the incredible gift of His only begotten son, to offer us a way for each of us to be reconciled to Himself.
What a humble way the Lord Jesus came into this world! Born in a manager, an animal feeding trough! Not even in a house, but in makeshift accommodation among cattle!
1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
The Lord giving His Son to die for our sins shows us very clearly how serious He took the problem of our sin! No wonder He requires that we take the Lord Jesus very seriously too in order for us to benefit, to be born again, through His Son! …
THE CENTRAL PICTURE
The reason why the Lord Jesus came – to suffer on a cruel Roman cross. Though far harsher was the fact that the Lord Jesus took the sins of the whole world – from Adam to the very last person who is to be born into this world before God destroys this sin broken world, and we are all into eternity! Either in Heaven or in hell. The sinless Son of God took that unimaginable amount of sin upon Himself, and suffered beyond any person’s comprehension, to provide the only way for potentially everyone to be born again (have a literal spiritual birth into the kingdom of God). BUT we have to take Him very seriously through the required kind of faith in His death, burial and resurrection…
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH, BUT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
The Lord Jesus tells Nicodemus, and us, plainly that we have to believe in Him to be born again (John 3:3-6), to, “have eternal life” (v15-16 above).
The Holy Spirit led the apostle Paul to share the same Gospel with different wording to help us appreciate the KIND OF BELIEF that the Lord Jesus was calling for in John 3…
Acts 20:21 “Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, REPENTANCE TOWARD GOD, AND FAITH TOWARD OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST.”
“Repentance toward God”, meaning that we have to change our thinking towards God, our attitude toward Him, to that of the highest respect / regard.
AS WELL AS…
“Faith toward out Lord Jesus Christ”, which is whole hearted faith in Christ’s death (for our sin), burial and finally His resurrection (Romans 10:9; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV).
When the Holy Spirit witness’s such repentance toward God, and whole-hearted faith in the Lord Jesus Christ He brings about that person’s salvation, their spiritual birth into the kingdom of God…
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
And lastly, the blessed Spirit of God will confirm the spiritual birth of each individual that is born again by His inner witness with their Spirit…
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Meaning simply that He brings all whom have been born again to know with by Him that they are secure in Christ. That they have been born again. They have complete peace about the matter.
